Methods of Installing Carpets

There are numerous ways of installing carpet and fixing one constant strip is better known as waterfall method. But the only disadvantage is that the carpet becomes loose very easily.

The next method is ‘Cap and Band’ which features installing each portion of the carpet fixed firmly. This method allows for long term secured carpet installation on stairs.

It is essential to understand the specific terms that are associated with stairs. Riser is the vertical portion of the stair while Tread is the horizontal portion which is used for stepping on.

Steps for Installing Carpet on Stairs

Setting up the tackless strips

The first step is to attach the tackless strips to each step. Basically, a tackless strip is a piece of wood that is put on the stairs to help install the carpeting properly. As it has tack points and grabs the carpet and in most cases, the tackless strips have pre-hammed nails so you just need to hammer it on your stairs.

In most cases, you would need two tackless strips per tread on each step. This is needed to grab and hold the carpet on both the upper tread and the lower end of the stair. Make sure that you start from the bottom of the stairs and attach the tackless strips to every riser. The tackless strip should be placed such that strip attached on each tread has points aimed towards the top of the stairs.

Installing the Padding

As per the accurate measurements, cut a piece of padding to cover the riser and tread. Attach it such that the carpet padding runs from the top of the riser to the edge but its best to leave a bit of the padding. You can utilize a stapler to adjust and then staple the carpet padding on the stair. You can keep on doing that for all the stairs.

Final Step of Carpet Installation

It is best to start with the correct measurements of the base of the riser to the edge of the riser. Additionally you can calculate the surface of the tread from one surface to the next. This is the total length of the carpet that you will need. Cut as per requirement. The required length would be the complete width of the stair and the length that was already measured. The next step is to fasten the carpet against the tackless strip and ensure that it is fastened well on the bottom of the riser.

You will need to staple the carpet strip exactly where the riser meets the tread and it is best to apply staples at least 3 to 4 inches apart all along the width. Press it against the tackless strip for a smooth looking carpet. Repeat these guidelines for all the remaining steps and you would be surprised that though it may take a little more time, your project will turn out looking professional.
